Music and laughter fill the Rehab Gym at Signature Healthcare of Monteagle as elders and staff dance and exercise to the oldies. They are participating in Zumba Gold and having a blast. This weekly Zumba Gold class focuses on cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, balance and most of all, fun! Jessica Miller, Speech-Language Pathologist and Certified Zumba Gold instructor, leads the class with the assistance of members of the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy teams.
Zumba Gold is a modified version of Zumba that recreates the original moves of Zumba but at lower intensity. Each class is performed sitting but with the assistance of their therapist, some residents participate in parts of the class while standing. The class integrates movements that focus on balance, range of motion and coordination with the fun of dance and music.
To date, over 27 different elders in conjunction with their therapy have participated in Zumba Gold classes with more to come!
